One of the main herd bulls was taken Thanksgiving week 2005.  He was taken by Airman Matthew Sharp, 21, previously of Delta Junction.  Sharp is currently stationed as an Air Traffic Control Radar Operator for the United States Air Force in Nellis AFB, Nevada.
After a brief stalk, Sharp was able to get close enough to take him with one shot.  He was shooting his father's Sako .375 H & H magnum rifleThe ammo used was a .375 H & H magnum caliber with a .300 grain Winchester silver tip bullet. The Sako rifle is imported from Finland by Stoeger Arms, Inc. , New Jersey and was customized by his father with a McMillan fiberglass stock and a Nikon 3x-9x scope. The animal weighed close to a ton.

Ray Wonders had great weather, the drive up was alittle precarious as the road conditions were marginal.  He and his son, Hunter, left very early and got here in time to take this 2.5 year old bison bull.  Ray used a model 700 338 and 250 grain nozler partition ammo.  One shot, he and Hunter went home the next day - traveling with their pickup and camper which housed their bison meat, head & hide.  Well, if things got tough and they got tired, they said they'd camp out in the camper with the meat.  They were a great father/son duo.  Good shooting Ray!

I don't know when I've enjoyed the company of anyone more.  Beverly Curtiss is a class act.  She'd never shot a large animal before and she was honest about her trepidation.  But she did a fine job.  One shot and the animal went down!  Beverly used a 7MM Savage with a Leopold Scope, 175 grain trophy bonded bear claw ammo.  She and her husband, Glen along with son, Shakobi (Kobi for short) made a day of, traveling up from Kenai.  She spent the first late afternoon deciding which animal she wanted and the next day, with patience, waited until the animal was in a position that would give a clean shot.

Bev loves to fish and she brought me up a cooler of treats: salmon, halibut, smoked fish and more!  Thank you from the interior residents.  By the way, she is Kelly Curtiss sister who came up and took an elk off the ranch earlier in the season.

Chuck Taylor and friend traveled from Anchorage to take a 2.5 year old bison bull.  Chuck's family runs the Checker Taxi-Cabs in the city along with a business of building enclosed trailers for such things as snowmachines, 4-wheelers, etc.  We had a great time meeting him and he did a super job taking this bison.  One clean shot.  Job well done.  He used a 30.06 Remington with 180 grain premier scirrocco bonded ammo.

Rod Kinney used a Winchester 300 Win Mag with 180 grain ammo to take this 2.5 year old bison.  Rod, his son, Jared along with Rod's brother, Clark, made the trek from southcentral Alaska.  They had to take time from their busy schedule but they knew they wanted to fill their freezer with this gourmet meat.  The Kinney's stayed overnite and Scott enjoyed taking care of the animal for them once it was shot.  It was a good clean shot.  With proper aging, this meat will be spectacular.

Mike Montgomery Jr. and 2 1/2 year old bison bull taken October 19, 2007. Mike used a 308 Winchester with 180 grain - silvertip ammo.  He took the animal at 35 yards, 1 shot behind the ear.  Mike and his father traveled up from Anchorage and after sighting in Mike's rifle, within a couple of hours was able to take the animal-spend an overnite in Delta at Kelly's Motel and head home the next day.

Kelly Curtiss used 375 H & H Sako Caliber 300 grain Federal to take this 6 point at 245 yards. 1 shot.
Kelly Curtiss used 375 H & H Sako Caliber 300 grain Federal to take this 6 point at 245 yards. 1 shot.

Kelly Curtiss and his wife, Kim, traveled up from the Kenai area on Tuesday night.  They came out Tuesday evening to sight in his rifle and take a look at the game ranch.  They spotted the 6 point elk and came early Wednesday to hunt.  They walked and road from dusk to dark unable to locate the animal again.  They saw some 5 point elk, cows and calves but no 6 point.  Finally, they went out Friday morning and spotted the herd with the 6 point that early morning.  At 245 yards, Kelly shot the elk and was able to spend the rest of the day with Scott skinning, gutting and quartering up the animal.  With determination and patience, he finally got his 6 point and did a fine job taking the animal.

Jon Arend showed his stuff, he walked the talk.  With a 62 pound Hoyt Recurve Bow and a 125 grain magnus stinger broadhead (on his Hoyt Easton full metal jacket arrow), he put down a 2.5 year old bison in one clean shot, right through the heart.

The animal expired quickly and Jon was able to bring home bison meat.
Excellent shot!

Scott and 5 point elk off the game ranch. November 2007.
We had a client who couldn't make the trip to Delta so Scott shot this  5 point elk for him as a meat animal.  At 240 yards, it was difficult to be able to stop the elk from moving into the woods.  When we approached, they began to walk very fast into the woods...this bull was the last in the line.  The first shot was a hit but he began to bolt, with the elk on the run, Scott was able to drop the animal with the second shot.

Mike Montgomery and 2007 Successful Elk Hunt-First of the season

After getting in from Anchorage at 2:00 PM, Mike Montgomery and his son, Mike, Jr., showed up at the ranch to site in the 300 WSM .  Upon reaching the back game ranch, Mike set up his bipod to try his rifle out in that terrain.  He used a call and very soon after, this 5 point bull showed up. Mike set up again, shot & hit the animal cleanly at 260 yards. Job well done. They returned to the home place and Scott proceeded to skin, gut & quarter the elk. It was a very successful afternoon, luck in seeing the animal so early and good shooting made a great day.

Mike is a physical education teacher from Anchorage.  It was great to see the father and son enjoy their experience on the game ranch.

Tim Mills had  a great day with about 0 degree temperatures.  He came in the day before, sighted in his Browning 30.06 at 50 yards and spent the night at the Silver Fox Roadhouse.  He and friend, Victor, showed up at 9:30 AM (daylight) and went out to take the 4.5 year old bison.  When they got out to the game ranch, the herd was visible-they spotted the bull they wanted, the herd started heading towards the woods.  Tim waited for other bison to clear, stopped and got in position with  a shooting stick and took the animal broadside in the neck.  He hit the bison perfectly, one shot.  He used Winchester 180 grain silver ballistic tip ammo.  Very nicely done.

Jay Goldberg drove up from Anchorage to take this 2.5 year old bison with a 75# Parker Bow, finger shot-using 2415 Aluminum Arrows with Steel Force Broadheads.

It took 3 approaches before he could get close enough to make a shot.  The first shot was a little low, after waiting a couple of minutes, Jay was able to place another arrow into the animal and the bison expired in seconds.

Paul Johnson got to the ranch at sunrise.  He'd traveled from Fairbanks but also had a couple of friends from Anchorage and Nenana.  He did an excellent job.  First, he sighted in his 30.06 Browning, then headed out to the game ranch.

The bison were very leery and it took quite some time but he finally got a good shot.  With open sights and using a bi-pod, he hit the mark.  One shot-one skill.  He used 180 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw Ammo.  By 2PM, he had the animal loaded into the back of his truck and was heading north.

Give Bill Moffatt credit.  I think it was about -35oF or colder this morning when we saw Bill drive up in his truck.  He had driven from Fairbanks. Bill took a 2.5 year old black colored bison. He shot the animal he wanted and 5 hours later he was on his way back to Fairbanks knowing he had gourmet meat to put in his freezer (once it was aged, cut and wrapped of course).

Dave Trainor and his Lion's Club Bison Hunt Raffle Hunt-Happy 50th Dave!
Dave showed up at the ranch with his friend, Bobby Jenkins.  Dave sighted in his Model 70 Remington 300 Windmag and headed out to the bison herd.  Dave took the bison with one shot-hit in a perfect spot-and the bison went down immediately.

The ammo that he used was specially made for him by a friend.  It did a fabulous job.  Its caliber was  .308 inches, 200 grains  with a mussle velocity of 2800 feet per second.

Dave, Bobby, Buckley and Scott brought the animal in and within 3 hours, the hunt, skinning, gutting and splitting the carcass in half was complete.  Dave spent his birthday happy to be putting meat in his freezer.  He was going to take the head to Mike North for mounting and delivered the meat to Delta Meat and Sausage for processing.

We were happy to be part of the Lion's Club raffle and their good cause.

Howard Mumau from Colville, Washington and the 6 point elk
Howard Mumau, 76 years old,  flew up from Colville, Washington with his son, Mickey.  They got in at 1AM to Fairbanks, stayed the night at Pike's and traveled the next morning to the game ranch.  Russell knew Mickey from firefighting in Washington state this year.

Howard and Russell walked and looked for the elk on Sunday but didn't spot them.  Howard and Mickey spent the night at the Silver Fox Roadhouse cabin and got up at daybreak to try on Monday.  Russell and Howard drove the truck out to the game ranch and spotted the 6 point elk.

Howard used a 300 Winchester magnun.  It took some walking but at 100 yards he was able to get his shot off.  He was able to take his animal early enough to bring it back to the ranch and have Scott skin it out.  They headed home the next day.  At about -25oF in the mornings, and -15oF while hunting, it made a chilly but successful day.

Steve Palmer and his wife, Karen, drove up from Anchorage after he got home from his hitch on the North Slope Oil Fields.  He & Karen drove all evening and arrived at 1AM today-dark driving for sure.  He showed up at 9AM (I heard he was up at 4AM having his coffee) sighted his rifle in and headed out to the herd of bison.

He used a Sako 300 Winchester Magnun, with 150 rain soft point ammo and a Nikon 4.5-15 scope.  He was roughly at 40 yards when he shot the bison.  He had to wait awhile as the bison were all bunched up-when the herd headed out, this bison bull was left to make a clear shot.

Ken Burch, his wife, Sonya and Scott Hollembaek headed out early morning to take a 2.5 year old bison. The bison stampeded away after being approached but after a short time, they were approached again.  Finally, Ken was able to get a good clear shot of the bull.  He used a 338 Ruger with 210 Barnes Triple Shot and at 70 yards, took one shot and hit the bison behind the ear.  One shot-clean job and well done. Ken and Sonya spent the night at the Silver Fox Roadhouse Cabins and had taken the road up from Soldotna.

Greg Geller from Kenai took this 3.5 year old bison with a clean shot.  He and his friends drove the road up from the Kenai area and arrived early enough the day before to sight in his scope and rifle - he had no trouble hitting the mark. Greg decided to fill his freezer with an Alaska Interior Game Ranch bison bull, a 100% sure thing.  He did a fine job. His rifle was a 300 Magnum and he used 180 grain nosler partition Federal ammo.

Larry and Sharon Vandergrift traveled up from Anchorage (Rabbit Creek) to take a 2.5 year old bison for meat.  Larry is retired FAA and Sharon hails from Kotzebue.  Turns out her grandmother was Dolly Grey, from Shishmaref which is my grandma's home village.  I'm sure they knew each other.  They had a nice stay at the Silver Fox Roadhouse and spent the day in the warm weather first, taking their bison bull from the herd, then staying around while Scott skinned, gutted and quartered it.  We had a great visit.

Larry's gun of choice was this 30.06 Browning which he's used for moose, caribou and now bison.  He's had this gun since he was 16 years old and is his "old faithful".  He made a perfect shot, one shot behind the ear-one shot/one kill.  Very good shooting.

Dr. Dennis Brich got to the ranch about 2PM.  He'd driven from Anchorage.  We drove down to the lower game ranch to see if we could find Scott.  Scott and Chirshel were rounding up 6 month old bison calves to trailer up and bring back to the home place.  We spotted some bison but didn't drive through the mud plus didn't want to disturb the round up of calves.  Dr. Brich went back to the Silver Fox Roadhouse cabin and called a couple of times from his cell phone. Scott brought the calves back (12 of them) and he and Dennis spoke, decided to skip dinner and go for the animal that night.  I was pretty impressed with Dr. Brich driving all day, waiting and taking the animal that night.  This allowed him an extra day to travel.  Scott ended up skinning the animal out under a nearly full moon & lamp.

Wayne Smith was quite the marksman.  He used a custom built 375 H & H, it was a real beauty (see "our life blog" link to view pictures on October 2, 2006).

He drove out to the herd with Scott & Wayne's friend, Bob , used a bi-pod and took about 20 minutes to decide which animal he wanted.  The animals had to clear from behind.  The bullet went right through the animal and out the other side.  He hit him in the axis joint behind the ear.  One shot-one kill-polaxe (hind quarters fall first).

Wayne is up from Minnesota.  Scott skinned out the animal in order for Wayne to have a head mount.  Nice job, nice fella.

Rodney Grant traveled down from Fairbanks with friend, Larry, to take this 2.5 year old bison with a Thompson Encore 30-06 Pistol. Scott, Larry & Rodney were out for quite some time, the bison were laying out in the small trees on the corner of the game ranch.  Rodney was taking an animal for meat, he didn't want the hide or head, so we had a bull picked out for him.  They had to stay in the pickup for almost the entire time and stop and wait while the animals moved & settled down in various locations.  They must have done this over a dozen times. Finally, Rodney got out of the pickup (left his bi-pod behind plus Scott & Larry)  while he located the bull he wanted.  He rested his gun on the front bumpter of the truck. He waited to get just the right shot and took it, one shot behind the ear.  The bison went down, hard & fast.  The total time from arriving at the game ranch, shooting, butchering & hanging the bison was 6 hours.
Thanks for being such a great sportsman Rodney!

Russ Hollembaek and harvested bison bull

Russell Hollembaek   is always willing to be there when his dad needs him to harvest a young bison bull to sell for meat. He used a 30.06 Winchester.

Russ just had reconstructive knee surgery 2 weeks prior.

Buck and bison
Buck and bison

Buck took this bison with a 45.70 Marlin rifle.
This will probably be our last animal taken for this season.
Thanks again Buckley for being there for the family and customers.

Buckley stands between two quarters of animals.  On the left is the bison (notice the yellow fat) and the right is an elk (notice the stripes of fat).  Buckley worked for a year as a meat cutter with Delta Meat and Sausage and we are forever grateful for his training.  Excellent ability to make cuts however, we let Delta Meat & Sausage take care of our customers or a shop of your preference.

Cierra Buntz drove with her family from Anchorage to participate in a bison hunt.  With her grandfather's Winchester Model 70 30.06 she had a successful one shot one kill superb experience.  Job well done!
